THE LIVING CORE OF TRABZON: ORTAHISAR NEIGHBORHOOD
There are plenty of historical artifacts in a narrow area in Ortahisar neighborhood. The oldest one among these artifacts is Altinbasli Meryemana Church (Panaghia Khrysokephalos Virgin Church) dated 914. It was converted to a mosque and started to be known as Fatih or Ortahisar Mosque. Mehmet Sultan, the Conquerer has performed his first Friday prayer here. The residence opposite to this mosque is the house where Suleiman the Magnificent lived. The house serves as a museum today.
