Let alone pages, even books would not be enough to properly elucidate Of, the adorable county of one of the metropolis' of the Eastern Black Sea Region, economically, historically, politically and culturally. Of has always been able to shine out due to its geographical and strategic structure, in both pre-republic and repuplic periods. When we take a glimpse at the history of “OF”, we see that it was one of the cities founded by the seamen of Mythos and was independent until being annexed by the Pontus Kingdom in B.C 312, however there is no certain documentary that proves that information.
Until the year 1461 when the city of Trabzon was taken by the Turkish, Of was governed by many societies like Persians, Seleucia Kingdom, Colonialists, Pontus Kingdom, Rome Empire, Byzantium Empire and Trabzon Rum Pontus Empire.
The most important success in the history of Of is to have started the war of independence. Russia made a front line in Eastern Black Sea Region during World War 1. They thought they could pass easily through of but they came across an unexpected resistance in March 1919 and gave many casualties. Many people joined that struggle from neighbour counties and villages. The Russian Army whose main purpose was to reach Erzurum through the Black Sea Region and lay siege to the region had to change plans due to the resistance in Of. The city was held captive for two years. Turkish government re-claimed the county in 28th February 1918.
