ABOUT MAÇKA
Maçka is a town which is connected to Trabzon Province. It is on the Gümüşhane highway and 29 kilometers in distance to Trabzon. Town center which was found on the stream bed that is between the valleys where there are mostly spruce forests, in terms of natural beauty, is one of the richest parts of Trabzon Province. Sumela Monastery (Virgin Mary), which was established 17 kilometers to the south of Maçka, is important in terms of tourism receipts of Trabzon Province and Maçka Town.

Maçka property which is formed by high mountains all around is covered with forests up to 2000 meters, and in higher places it is covered by pastures and mountain plants. These high places called as plateau are unique with its natural beauties, in terms of scenery, fresh air and spring waters. Unfortunately there haven't been any excavations to help enlighten the history of the region furthermore. The town has a history of 2400 years which is documented.

It is known that the word “Maçka” comes from Caucasian language and afterwards the pronunciation of it was changed by local Christians. It is obvious that it was in a position of a bridge which connects Trabzon, which is an important settlement centre, to the people who live in Erzurum and Erzincan even in 1040 B.C. In Maçka region, it is seen that the first settlements were formed in order to defend themselves and because of not being able to pass to steady agriculture with the effect of nutrition, they were established in the plateaus. The town that was invaded by Russians in 1916 was recaptured with the withdrawal of Russians.
