ABOUT VAKFIKEBİR
Vakfikebir is 40 km west of Trabzon, surrounded by Carsibasi in the east, Besikduzu in the west, Tonya in the south and Black Sea in the north. From Işıklı lighthouse the coastline turns first south west then north west to form the large bay called “Büyükliman” (The Big Harbour). The bay of Buyukliman is partly closed to northwestern wind making it a good refuge for the sailors. The tale of how this county took its name is interesting.
THE ARSENAL
The Arsenal is the most striking structure among the ones in Trabzon. According to the Yıldız Palace records, it was constructed in 1305 in Islamic Calendar (1887 in Gregorian calendar).
THE PLATEAU OF MARTYRS: SULTAN MURAD
Sultan Murad Plateau located on the route of Trabzon-Caykara-Atakoy, has an height of 2200 m. “Yayla Ortasi Festival” is held every year on August 20. Also “Martyrs’ Memorial Day” is organized every year on June 23 for the martyrs of the war with Russians. Murad IV performed Friday prayer in this plateau on the way back home from Iranian expedition dated 1653. He had stayed here for a few days.
A JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH: CAL CAVE
Cal Cave is recognized as the second longest cave of the world. A small stream flows through the cave. There is a historical castle over the cave.
ZAĞNOS PASHA BRIDGE
Zağnospaşa Bridge links the Zindan Gate with the İmaret Gate. It has two arches, one on top of the other. Roman and Byzantine work manship is observed on piers of the bridge. Historic records mention about the existence of a wooden drawbridge on the site of this bridge. Researchers reveal that the bridge consists of 4 construction layers. It was also repaired again aſter the repair of Zağnos Pasha in the 15th century.
THE FORTRESS OF TRABZON
Most of the ramparts that are among the city’s oldest structures are still standing today. The oldest ones of these date back to the Roman Period, 4th century BC.
ABOUT ÇAYKARA
The history of town is related to that of Trabzons in general. According to historical reports, the town has been settled down by so many tribes since Hittites. It fell under the hegemony of Pechenegs and Byzantines. Ultimately, in 1461, Mehmed II took Trabzon from Pontus Empire and it came under the rule of Ottoman Empire. In 1915, during the World War I, the town was invaded by Russian Army.
